The tree was planted in Grant Park in 2004 because the former Beatle spent his final days in Los Angeles and was an avid gardener, according to the Los Angeles Times. Another tree is expected to be planted shortly.

The memorial tree had grown to more than 10 feet by 2013 but the beetle invasion was apparently too much for it, according to the paper.
