Sturgill Simpson Announces 2020 ‘A Good Look’n Tour’ With Opener Tyler Childers

Sturgill Simpson plays the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots April 27, 2018.
Sturgill Simpson on Tuesday formally announced “A Good Look’n Tour,” which he teased last month on “The Joe Rogan Experience.”
The tour, which follows the release of the Grammy-winning artist’s fourth studio album, Sound & Fury, last month, kicks off Feb. 21 at Legacy Arena at the BJCC in Birmingham, Ala., and concludes May 24 at KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, Ky.
Along the way, Simpson will hit several major arenas, including Dallas’ American Airlines (March 27), Chicago’s United Center (April 3) and New York’s Madison Square Garden (May 16). He’ll also play several large theaters, including The Met Philadelphia (March 14) and Washington, D.C.’s Anthem (March 15-16), and an amphitheatre, for good measure (Gorge Amphitheatre in George, Wash., on May 2).
As Simpson alluded in his “Rogan” interview, recent Pollstar Hotstar and cover subject Tyler Childers will open the tour, which is presented by AEG Presents.
Paradigm represents both Simpson and Childers, and the former has produced the latter’s two most recent albums.
Following the late September release of Sound & Fury, Simpson embarked on a six-date club tour and donated all proceeds from the shows to the Special Forces Foundation; he’ll donate $1 from each “A Good Look’n Tour” ticket sold to the same nonprofit.
“We are a live band,” Simpson said in a statement. “Everyone knows we are a live band. Steal the record or give it away, just come to the shows. For free tickets send a message to Tyler’s Instagram.”
Simpson’s 2020 U.S. tour follows a brief late January European run that will hit cities including Copenhagen, Stockholm, Berlin, Amsterdam and London.
Even given Simpson’s substantial live growth on the heels of his 2016 album A Sailor’s Guide to Earth, which won the Grammy for Best Country Album, his 2020 bookings are impressive. In April 2018, he and John Prine sold out New York’s Radio City Music Hall in a co-headlining show; come 2020, Simpson will play to an audience two to three times bigger at Madison Square Garden. In May 2018, Simpson opened a show for Nelson at The Anthem; next year, he’ll headline the venue for two shows.
To date, Simpson’s highest box office gross is that Radio City show with Prine, which grossed $452,178. His next-highest tally came at Austin360 Amphitheater in Austin, Texas, on Sept. 9, 2017, when Simpson sold 8,976 tickets and grossed $316,953.
