Coinciding with September marking Suicide Prevention Month, details have been announced for the “Avicii Tribute Concert For Mental Health Awareness” with a lineup featuring 19 of the original singers on the DJ/producer’s biggest tracks.
The event takes place Dec. 5 at Friends Arena in Stockholm, with all net profits going to support organizations that address mental health needs and suicide prevention. The concert is being produced by The Tim Bergling Foundation, which was launched by the family of Avicii (aka Tim Burgling) in his memory after he passed away in April 2018. The foundation focuses on preventing suicide and health, as well as climate, development assistance, threatened nature and endangered species.
“Tim had plans for his music to be performed together with a large live band, and now we are realizing his dream and giving fans a chance to experience his music in this unique way,” says Klas Bergling, Tim’s father.
The concert will feature Adam Lambert, Alex Ebert, Aloe Blacc, Amanda Wilson, Andreas Moe, Audra Mae, Blondfire, Bonn, Carl Falk, Dan Tyminski, Daniel Adams Ray, Joe Janiak, Nick Furlong, Otto Knows, Rita Ora, Sandro Cavazza, Simon Aldred, Vargas Lagola, Zak Abel and more artists to be announced, along with a 30-piece band. The setlist will be made up of two hours of Avicii’s original music, including many tracks that have never been performed live.
“We are grateful that his friends, producers, artists and colleagues are coming to Stockholm to help,” Bergling added. “They have all expressed a sincere interest and desire to engage in efforts to stem the tide of mental illness and lend their support to our work with the Tim Bergling Foundation. We are very much looking forward to this evening, which will be a starting point for the foundation’s work going forward.
“Every year around 1500 people take their own lives in Sweden and globally up to one million. It is a tragedy that affects families, communities and with long-term effects on relatives who live on in grief. It is a global crisis and the second most common cause of death among young people aged 15-29 (according to the World Health Organization). We want this concert to help put the topic on the agenda and pay attention to the stigma surrounding mental illness and suicide. Policies and tools are needed to detect the risks and prevent suicide, especially among young people.”
Tickets go on sale Sept. 5 at 10:00 am CET.
Avicii was found dead in Muscat, Oman, April 20, 2018, at age 28 from an apparent suicide. He had traveled to Oman April 8 to visit friends in the country’s royal family, according to Rolling Stone. Although he had announced a retirement from touring in 2016, Avicii had been busy working on new music.
He had been a touring powerhouse, playing shows across the globe. Avicii’s biggest solo show was in his native Sweden – two nights at Stockholm’s Tele2 Arena Feb. 28 and March 1, 2014. It grossed $4.9 million and sold 69,725 tickets.
