Iron & Wine, Calexico Announce Europe / U.S. Tour, New Album
Piper Ferguson – Iron & Wine and Calexico
Singer-songwriter Iron & Wine and Tex-Mex Southwestern instrumental band Calexico have teamed up again with a lengthy tour kicking off June 18 in North Carolina and taking them to Europe through July before another kicking off another European tour leg in November.
Venues and cities include European festival slots such as Super Bock in Portugal, Cambridge Folk Festival in the UK, the Tempodrom in Berlin, and the list of North American venues includes the recently reopened Knitting Factory in Boise, Rialto Theatre in Tucson, and Vogue Theatre in Vancouver BC.
The two musical entities — Sam Beam as Iron & Wine and the Arizona-based Calexico led by Joey Burns and John Convertino — first hooked up the 2005 EP In The Reins and tour that included 2,321 tickets sold to the Wiltern in Los Angeles, but much has changed.
“This project had to find the right time,” Joey concludes. “We’re all different people than we were in 2004, and music helps to bridge some of the gaps. For all the things going on in our world and in each of our lives, this connection, this friendship, this love that we have—this album is a vehicle for that bond. It’s a chance to see where we’re at, take stock and be there for our friends.”
“They were the perfect band at the perfect time for me,” Sam Beam adds in the announcement. “I loved all their different sounds. They’re musical anthropologists, not regurgitating but absorbing what they discover.” Nearly 15 years on, “coming back to the project has to do with acknowledging how much impact the first record had for me in my life.”
Recent Iron & Wine tour history submitted to Pollstar includes
1,128 tickets sold ($44,805 grossed) to the Paramount Theatre in Huntington, N.Y., in November, and a sold-out 1,300 tickets to the Rialto in Tucson in September, which grossed $36,464.
The new LP, Years To Burn, drops June 14 on Sub Pop records. It was recorded in Nashville with producer Matt Ross-Spang at Sound Emporium, a fabled studio founded in the sixties by Cowboy Jack Clement and the site of countless landmark sessions in country and rock over the ensuing decades.
