A music visionary
United Talent Agency (UTA) today announced the signing of entrepreneur and music mogul Troy Carter in all areas.
Most recently serving as the Global Head of Creator Services at digital streaming giant Spotify, Carter comes to UTA with a focus on developing innovative ventures in verticals including film, TV and theater.
“Troy Carter has achieved success in everything he’s done,” said UTA CEO, Jeremy Zimmer. “He’s not only one of today’s most innovative, self-made leaders in music and tech, he’s broken ground as a creator, an executive and investor. His unique vision for the future will touch every area of UTA and we look forward to exploring new avenues of business with him.”
“UTA is becoming a creative hub at the intersection of music and art culture,” said Carter. “Jeremy Zimmer and his team are passionate, hungry and have shown exemplary taste when presenting me with projects. I look forward to working with them on this next chapter and bringing inspiring stories to the world.”
On the film and TV side, Carter currently has several projects in development at Netflix, Universal Pictures and Apple. UTA will also help broaden his reach by setting up projects in theater.
Carter received an Emmy nomination for “Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Special,” for his work on HBO’s acclaimed, Lady Gaga Presents the Monster Ball Tour: At Madison Square Garden. He also appeared as a guest judge on Season 7 of ABC’s hit prime-time show, Shark Tank.
At Spotify, where he maintains an advisory role, Carter built and led a global team that focused on bridging the gap between the brand at large and the creative community. His work was instrumental in developing the next generation of artists and empowering them to bring their creative visions to life. Carter’s background in the music space and deep knowledge of the marketplace was key to enhancing the platform’s relationships across the industry and growing the business exponentially.
Over a decade ago, Carter was one of the earliest trailblazers in the emerging digital music and media space. He identified social media platforms as the next frontier for artists leveraging their presence online to directly reach their audiences and helped build massive digital fanbases for tastemakers like Lady Gaga.
On the ventures side, Carter is an investor with 80+ holdings in market-leading companies including Uber, Dropbox, Lyft, Spotify, Slack, Warby Parker, Gimlet Media, The Skimm and others.
The music industry veteran has worked with influential labels and management companies such as Bad Boy Entertainment and Erving Wonder. In 2007, he founded Atom Factory, which he leveraged to grow a successful talent management division. Carter has since managed globally renowned artists such as Lady Gaga, John Legend, Eve, Nelly, Meghan Trainor, Priyanka Chopra, among others.
