Perry Farrell is celebrating Chanukah in style this year by debuting new music from his first solo album in 18 years, along with his new group, Perry Farrell’s Kind Heaven Orchestra, as part of the inaugural “Bill Graham Festival of Lights.”
The Kind Heaven Orchestra features Soundgarden’s Matt Chamberlain on drums and Jane’s Addiction’s Chris Chaney on bass, along with Matt Rohde on keys, Nick Maybury on guitar and Etty Lau Farrell on vocals. The new solo album from the Jane’s Addiction singer and Lollapalooza co-founder, Kind Heaven, will be released in 2019. Co-produced by Jarrell and Tony Visconti, the LP features contributions from Tommy Lee, Dhani Harrison, Taylor Hawkins. A release date has not yet been revealed.
The Bill Graham Festival of Lights begins with a Nov. 30 concert at Los Angeles’ Teragram Ballroom, with support from Dhani Harrison and Palms Station.
The multi-day event named in honor of the late, esteemed concert promoter and Holocaust survivor continues with a stop at The Fillmore in San Francisco on Dec. 2, the first day of Chanukah and Bill Graham Menorah Day.
Prior to Sunday’s concert, the 1st Union Square Candle Lighting Ceremony will be held in the afternoon by the Bill Graham Menorah Project. The project was established by local promoter Billy Cohen and Rabbi Yosef Langer, Executive Director, Chabad of S.F., to support the annual Chanukah Festival of Lights in Union Square.
Known as the “Mama Menorah” for the thousands it inspired globally, the giant public menorah in San Francisco’s Union Square was erected in 1975 with the support of Graham. The menorah is significant for being the first big public menorah and celebration of Chanukah outside of Israel.
Farrell will appear at the ceremony, along with David & Alex Graham, local dignitaries and long-time colleagues of Graham. Jerry’s Kosher Deli – a jam band featuring veteran San Francisco musicians Jordan Feinstein, Ben Bernstein, Byron Rynes, and Greg Anton – will also perform, along with special guests.
A lighting ceremony will be held each of the eight days of Chanukah, followed by Jewish Heritage Night with the Golden State Warriors Dec. 10.
“Bill Graham set the highest bar for the art of public assemblage at The Fillmore, and we pay tribute to his legacy and to San Francisco by spreading the message of light and peace this holiday season,” Farrell said in a statement, according to the Jewish Community Federation & Endowment Fund.
A portion of the proceeds of The Festival of Lights will benefit the Bill Graham Memorial Foundation in support of the Bill Graham Menorah Project.
