Scotland’s The Event Complex Aberdeen Opens With Elton John Show In 2020
Elton John just added 15 new UK and Ireland dates to his mammoth “Farewell Yellow Brick Road” tour. Two concerts are going to take place at The Event Complex Aberdeen (TECA), Nov. 20-21, inaugurating the building’s concert activity. The new dates also mark the first 2020 dates of John’s three-year trek around the world.
The Event Complex Aberdeen, or TECA, is the official name of the new exhibition and conference center for the Scottish harbor city, scheduled to open in summer 2019.
The new building will contain an 9,000 square-meter arena with an all-standing concert capacity of 12,500. In total TECA comprises 48,000 square meters of internal event space, which includes 33,000 square meters of subterranean space as well as a 6,000 square meters, divisible into three 2,000 square meters spaces.
The entire venue cost £333 million ($437 million) to build and will be managed, operated and programmed by SMG, which agreed to a 10-year deal with Aberdeen City Council.
TECA is being delivered by Aberdeen City Council in partnership with Henry Boot Developments, and constructed in Bucksbur. It will succeed Aberdeens old exhibition center in Bridge of Don.
With Sir Elton John, TECA’s head of entertainment Louise Stewart has scored a worthy first live act for the new venue. “We are so pleased to finally announce our first music act for TECA, welcoming Sir Elton John back to the North East of Scotland for a final time is an honour,” she said, adding that “attracting music royalty to Aberdeen’s transformational new venue is key to the success of TECA.”
Aberdeen City Councillor Jenny Laing said, “TECA is designed to play a significant role in ensuring Aberdeen and the wider north-east continues to compete on a global scale by attracting major artists and new events as well as retaining existing international events.
“The venue fits with the aims of our Regional Economic Strategy which has internationalisation at its heart and is vital to the area’s future prosperity.”
John’s “Farewell Yellow Brick Road” is already underway, it kicked off Sept. 8 at the PPL Center in Allentown, PA. The iconic Englishman will visit five continents until 2021, hitting North America, Europe, Asia, South America and Australasia.
