According to DEAG’s chief operating officer and chief digital officer Christian Diekmann, “the third edition of Rockavaria celebrated a very successful premiere at the new location Königsplatz. The special location with all its contradictions – very central and yet park-like, rock and metal between classicistic-historical buildings – is just unique.”

DEAG sold 35,000 tickets for the third edition of Rockavaria, which started out at Munich’s Olympic Stadium in 2015 and 2016, before taking a break last year. Having two stages at Königsplatz this year, the main King’s Stage as well as the smaller Green Stage on the side, was a “complete success,” according to Diekmann.

He told Pollstar, “the short-term cancellation of Die Toten Hosen due to health reasons was met with much sympathy and understanding among the visitors. Limp Bizkit took on the headliner slot and created an exuberant atmosphere by playing a longer setlist.

“One of the highlights was certainly the performance by metal legend Iron Maiden around its charismatic front man Bruce Dickinson, who inspired the fans with hits like ‘Fear of the dark’ or ‘The Number of the Beast’.”

When questioned whether the festival has found a new home in Munich, Diekmann said: “Since the premiere at Königsplatz was successful and had been be carried out to the satisfaction of all participants from an organizational point of view, we currently assume that Rockavaria will be continued at Königsplatz.”

Rockavaria promoter DEAG celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. Pollstar spoke with company founder and CEO Peter Schwenkow about this milestone.
