The ‘Free Bird’ Flies One Last Time: Lynyrd Skynyrd Announces Final Show

Lynyrd Skynyrd is returning to it home of Jacksonville, Fla., to play its last concert Sept. 2 at EverBank Field, home of the NFL’s Jaguars.

The announcement was made at the team’s annual state of the franchise presentation by Skynyrd’s own Johnny Van Zant and Rickey Medlocke, both Jacksonville natives, who added that the show will be co-headlined by Kid Rock and Jason Aldean, according to 4JAX. 

“This is a dream come true for the Lynyrd Skynyrd band,” Van Zant said at the presentation. “We’re going to rock the house here.”

The all-day event marks the stadium’s first concert since it hosted the Florida County Superfest in 2015 and will feature food trucks and games. 

The band had already announced in January that they would be embarking on their farewell tour beginning May 4 at the Coral Sky Amphitheater in West Palm Beach Fla. The outing, dubbed “Last of the Street Survivors Farewell Tour,” will also hit venues including Dos Equis Pavilion in Dallas, Riverbend Music Center in Cincinnati and Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, Calif.

Lynyrd Skynyrd is one of several acts who announced its retirement this year, as artists including Ozzy Osbourne, Elton John and Paul Simon are also bidding farewell. 

 

The group reported plenty of dates to Pollstar’s Boxoffice last year, including high grossing shows at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre in Saint Augustine, Fla., selling 3,816 tickets and grossing $291,246; WinStar Global Event Center in Thackerville, Okla., selling 3,437 tickets and grossing $220,245; and at Germain Arena in Estero, Fla., moving 5,266 tickets and grossing $293,896. They also played opening dates for Hank Williams Jr.
