Rapper ‘Gee Money’ Killed In Shooting

Police in Louisiana’s capital city say a 22-year-old who rapped about street violence was killed in a weekend shooting.

Garrett Burton, of Baton Rouge, was known as an up-and-coming rap artist who performed as “Gee Money” and “Da Real Gee Money.”

Baton Rouge news outlets report that he was found in a parking lot about 1:30 a.m. Sunday. Police said he died at the scene.

Police don’t know the motive for the killing and no suspects have been identified.

“Rapping was his heart,” Baton Rouge activist Arthur “Silky Slim” Reed told The Advocate on Sunday. “Rapping was definitely his love.”

Many teens looked up to Burton as a local leader, he said.

“I’m just praying for his family, and, that his life will save someone else’s life that’s on the same track,” Reed said.

He said he also hopes people will learn to think twice about dialogue that makes violence seem a normal part of life.

“We have to watch what we speak into existence,” Reed said.

One song on Burton’s Soundcloud page , called “Ambition as a Rider,” includes the refrain

“I can’t let you run up on me.

That’s why I keep this gun up on me.

If you run up you get done up on me.”
