Gender Concerns At Roseland Theater

The Roseland Theater in Portland, Ore., is implementing increased security training after it fired a security guard for allegedly discriminating against a transgender woman.

Mira Glitterhound, frontwoman of the Roseland Theater punk band, told the Portland Mercury that she and two of her friends were discriminated against by Roseland staff while attending an Aug. 17 show.

Glitterhound alleged her companions, who identify as non-binary, were forced to enter through the venue’s security checkpoint marked for women. Later, Glitterhound was denied entrance into the women’s bathroom by a security guard. When she told him she was a woman, the guard responded, “I don’t have time for this. You need to use the men’s room.”

The theater terminated the guard the next day, in addition to announcing it would no longer have a gendered security checkpoint.

“The Roseland Theater embraces the diversity of our community and all people who attend shows at our venue,” the Theater said in a statement apologizing to Glitterhound. “We look forward to using this unfortunate and troubling situation as a teachable moment for the entirety of our staff and security.”
