Aimee Mann Extends U.S. Routing
With sold-out dates on her spring tour, Aimee Mann has added another leg of gigs to her U.S. schedule. The excursion will now keep her busy through late June.
Mann is supporting her new album, Mental Illness, which was released in late March.
“A friend of mine was asking me what the record was about,” Mann told NPR. “And I said, ‘Oh, you know, my usual songs about mental illness,’ kind of being glib about it. And then my other friend said, ‘Maybe you should call it Mental Illness,’ also being glib. It’s so bald, but also accurate and funny, so it really made me laugh. And I felt like if it’s making you laugh, there must be something accurate about it.”
The nearly all-acoustic album is highlighted by a “finger-picky” style that is inspired by some of Mann’s favorite ’60s and ’70s folk rock.
The album features Jonathan Coulton on acoustic guitar and backing vocals, Jay Bellerose on drums, Jamie Edwards on piano, and Ted Leo on background vocals. Mann co-wrote the project with John Roderick.
A review from NPR’s Stephen Thompson proclaims, “Mann is nothing if not an intellectually lively songwriter, not to mention a deeply funny person, so there’s much more to Mental Illness than mere dirges, or waltzes, or rundowns of life’s accumulated disappointments. Most notably, these songs are buoyantly catchy in their own way, with calmly dispensed beauty that consistently outweighs their dourness.”
