Primus, Heiroglyphics, Tune-Yards To Play Oakland Benefit

In the wake of the “Ghost Ship” warehouse fire which killed 36 in Oakland, Calif., local promoters have organized a concert to raise money for a relief fund.

The “Oakland United” concert will be held Dec. 14 at the  in Oakland. The shindig is being organized by , Another Planet Entertainment and Paradigm Agency’s Oakland Office. The night will feature music and stories about the Bay Area and DIY scene from which Ghost Ship sprung.

The “Oakland United” concert will be held Dec. 14 at the . Journalists booked for the event include Gabe Meline of KQED and Sam Lefebvre, who writes for Pitchfork and East Bay Express.

100 percent of the proceeds from ticket sales benefit the Gray Area Foundation For the Arts Oakland Fire Relief Fund. This organization is working with the Mayor’s Office, the Red Cross and local art institutions to provide relief to the fire victims and their families. After the relief efforts associated with the warehouse conclude, the foundation will pivot towards preventing future tragedies.

“It is unfortunate that it takes a tragedy to shed light on a broader situation around the need for safe venues for artists, musicians, and creatives in the Bay Area,” Josette Melchor, executive director and founder of the Gray Area Foundation For The Arts said. Melchor will speak at the event.

A building called the Ghost Ship, which had been illegally converted into an artist work/living space, caught fire Dec. 2 during an electronic dance concert. The 36 victims included resident artists, musicians and concertgoers. The Associated Press reported that former residents said the warehouse was “a death trap with few exits, a rickety makeshift staircase, piles of driftwood, and a labyrinth of electrical cords.”
