WCAX-TV reports 242 Main, a Burlington venue, is hosting its final show Saturday. The city of Burlington, which owns the building, is closing it down due to structural problems that would reportedly cost $15 million to fix.
At least 20 bands are scheduled to play at the venue Saturday during an all-day show that is free. The venue calls itself the country’s oldest, all-ages punk club and prides itself on being a substance-free space for teenagers and others to gather.
Jane Sanders, the wife of Sen. Bernie Sanders, helped set up the venue in the 1980s as director of the Mayor’s Youth Office. Bernie Sanders was mayor at the time.
