Man Jailed Over Stereosonic Drug Death

Daniel Dung Huynh pleaded guilty to supplying two ecstasy tablets to Sylvia Choi, a 25-year-old pharmacist whom he knew from high school. She died in hospital care after overdosing.

When giving Choi and her boyfriend the drugs, Huynh had warned them to take only half a pill. Choi had replied, “Have a bad track record with halves.”

The physiotherapist is out on bail after posting A$10,000 ($7,668) surety following an immediate appeal. At the Burwood Local Court, magistrate Michelle Goodwin remarked that WhatsApp messages between Huynh and Choi proved he was an “organised and experienced person in drug supply.”

Huynh’s barrister Carolyn Davenport SC, argued that he should not be punished for Choi’s death as it is not yet confirmed if the 25-year-old overdosed on something else she may have taken on the day.

A coronial inquest into Choi’s death will be held in October. Davenport added her client was not a drug dealer, as he only supplied a specific amount ordered from a circle of friends “as it was his turn” and he made no profit.

“He has expressed remorse at the death and the supply of drugs,” Davenport said. “He has pleaded guilty at the first opportunity.”
