Adelaide Guitar Festival Expands To Hospitals, Nursing Facilities

The 2016 Adelaide Guitar Festival (Aug. 11-14) is expanding to new venues to find new audiences.

A new component called Resonate will see some of the 300 artists โ€“ including 18 global names โ€“ performing in hospital wards and homes for elderly people around Adelaide. The program acknowledges the human need for music and musicโ€™s role in health, wellbeing and recovery โ€“ a topic discussed at a free panel. Another new initiative is Guitars In Bars, where local rock, jazz, blues and folk guitarists will perform in more than 100 venues across the state.

Festival artistic director Slava Grigoryan, an acclaimed classical guitarist, said: โ€œThis year, our Adelaide Guitar Festival stretches into new territory throughout the city, across platforms and encompasses new ideas and musical adventures. I am so excited to be bringing together world-leading artists who traverse many genres, to be exploring the nexus of health and music in our new Resonance program and to be working with Adelaideโ€™s own world-class musicians.โ€

Among the events are the screening of the documentary โ€œPaco de Lucรญa: A Journeyโ€ of the late iconic flamenco guitarist by his filmmaker son Curro Sรกnchez; the Seville Guitar Festivalโ€™s artistic director Francisco Bernierโ€™s Australian debut performance of โ€œMemories of Spain;โ€ Spanish guitarist Ricardo Gallรฉnโ€™s interpretation of Bach; and the Adelaide Symphony Orchestraโ€™s world premieres of new works from Cuban composer Leo Brouwer.
