Jamaica Has One Love For Japan

The popularity of reggae and dance hall in Japan has been greatly appreciated by the government of Jamaica, whose principal director in the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport hailed the Japanese government recently for its continuing sponsorship of culture progams in her country.

Dr. Janice Lindsay was specifically talking about Japan’s endorsement for Jamaica’s successful bid to gain UNESCO recognition of various World Heritage sites. Japan also offers grants for exhibition facilities at the Institute of Jamaica and technical assistance to Lindsay’s ministry in its review of National Culture Policy.

She also mentioned the One Love Festival, which will take place May 28-29 in the waterfront area of Tokyo. The festival, which has been held every year since 2004, showcases music, art, food and fashion from Jamaica and is always well-attended.

Until about a decade ago, there were at least two annual reggae festivals held in Japan that always attracted the most well-known performers in the genre. The only reason they are no longer organized is that the promoters have since gone out of business due to other reasons.
