Jack Johnson, Phil Lesh, Stick Figure For Levitate Festival In Mass.
– Levitate 2019
Levitate Music & Arts Festival has announced a jam-packed lineup for July 10-12 at the Marshfield Fairgrounds in Marshfield, Mass., topped by Jack Johnson, Phil Lesh & Friends, Stick Figure, Tash Sultana, Old Crow Medicine Show and more for its eight edition — its first with a full third festival day following record crowds at last year’s event.
“As a surf shop launching a festival each summer, bringing Jack Johnson to headline is a very powerful opportunity to share Jack’s music and the common beliefs that Jack and the Levitate brand share– enhancing community, environmental awareness, and culture,” says festival co-founder Dan Hassett, who started Levitate along with wife Jessica Hassett and Thomas Cussins of Ineffable Music.
Also on the lineup are jam legends Umphrey’s McGee and Moe., reggae pioneers Toots and the Maytals, bluegrass virtuoso Billy Strings, Mt. Joy and many others.
Despite record crowds of up to 17,500 attendees per day in 2019 and the biggest lineup to date, according to the announcement, there will be no increase in ticket costs or fees in 2020, which it says carries forward the festival’s spirit of inclusivity and community. Last year’s Levitate was the first to have a partial third day of music, while this year’s Friday will be a full festival day.
Attractions onsite remain family-friendly, with amenities including the Levitate Kid’s Zone, ease of entry, free sunscreen and water refill stations, and space to lay out on picnic blankets. Also promised are enhanced art experiences in 2020, including more curated art exhibits and vendors, additional live murals, and an experiential and collaborative art installation designed to inspire widespread community recycling efforts and eco-awareness.
Headliner Jack Johnson is a perfect fit for the festival’s eco-awareness mission, which Hassett says is also a smart business move once you figure it out.
“What’s really amazing is how much waste there would be if you weren’t making a diligent effort to conserve,” Hassett told Pollstar previously. “It’s cool because it’s a multi-front thing. You have to invest some time and effort and money in it to do it right but in reality it’s not only something that helps the environment and educates future generations but it’s actually, business-wise, a good move. You end up saving quite a bit of money if you use less.
“You have to wrap your head around it, have to invest some time and thought. And I get it when you’re a business moving fast and it’s hard to slow down and reassess how you do things. But it’s nice when something like that lines up with business interests as well.”
A limited number of Early Bird General Admission passes go on-sale today, with three-day passes $159 for General Admission and $349 for VIP.
In 2019 it was announced that Live Nation had acquired a majority stake in Levitate, with Live Nation New England President Don Law saying at the time, “Dan, Jess and their community have poured their hearts and souls into creating Levitate Music Festival, and we look forward to working with them to build this truly unique experience. They have exceptional instincts in crafting a remarkable event for their audience and we look forward to connecting even more fans and artists through this boutique festival experience.”
