Pollstar Live! Preview: Emerging Markets: Can We (And Should We) Get There From Here?
– Jeremy Norkinnull
UTA music agent Jeremy Norkin will appear at Production Live at Pollstar Live! on Tuesday and took some time to answer a few questions ahead of his panel.
Name Of Panel: Emerging Markets: Can We (And Should We) Get There From Here?
In an era where an artist can quickly generate a truly global following and labels routinely plan global launches, the international touring market has shifted drastically. Many mainstream Western artists are legitimately capable of selling tickets in far flung territories, but is that reason enough to play there? The Middle East, Eastern Europe, India, Africa, China, and other territories are clearly worth a look, but just because an act can play there doesn’t mean they should play there. Among the considerations are cultural differences, logistics, geo-political climate, production capabilities, and whether the show is a one-off or destined to be a regular port-of-call. Production Live will examine this topic from all angles from experienced producers and world travelers.

What key issues will be discussed at your panel? The key issues that I think will be discussed are how agents make it economically viable for artists to play new and far territories. I also think we will be asked to provide our insights on how agents can identify promoters who may not have their clients’ best interests at heart.
What new trends are you seeing in your corner of the industry either as it relates to your panel or otherwise? In my corner of the industry, I’m seeing a diminishing disparity between Latin America’s exports and its imports. This is helping the Latim market develop more quickly and effectively, and creating more opportunities for artists.
What are you looking most forward to at this year’s conference? I am most excited about the networking at the panel this year. Pollstar Live! has never been as international as it is today. There are so many programmers from venues all over the world attending and speaking, and I am looking forward to hearing their perspectives.
What was your favorite live performance of the last few years? My favorite live performance in the last few years was Monsieur Periné at Austin City Limits. The show took place about halfway through a lengthy tour and they were playing incredibly well. They performed to a multicultural audience in a packed tent. The crowd was singing along in unison and they were totally charmed by the band. It was really great to see.
