Bob Weir and Wolf Bros Announce Four June Colorado Shows

Bob Weir and Wolf Bros confirmed four June concerts Monday, marking the Grateful Dead founder’s first shows with fans in stands since the start of the pandemic.

Weir will take the stage at Red Rocks Amphitheatre – a favorite haunt of the Dead’s – in Morrison, Colo., June 8-9, before heading to Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater in Vail, Colo., June 11-12.

The gigs will feature his typical Wolf Bros collaborators Don Was and Jay Lane, as well as the expanded slate of musicians – Dead & Company keyboardist Jeff Chimenti, steel guitarist Greg Leisz and brass section The Wolfpack – that has performed with Weir on monthly livestreams from his TRI Studios facility in San Rafael, Calif., in February, March and April of this year.

“Been too long,” Weir said in a statement, “but I can’t think of a better place to pick it back up…”

Weir’s final show before the pandemic, a Wolf Bros gig at the Chicago Theatre on March 11, 2020, sold 2,288 tickets and grossed $162,642. His highest-grossing box office report was a two-night stand at the same venue, Oct. 31-Nov. 1, 2018, where he moved 5,901 tickets and grossed $412,536.

The Grateful Dead performed at Red Rocks 20 times between 1978 and 1987, and Weir has remained a fixture at the venue in the years since. Weir played with his band Ratdog as support for Phil Lesh & Friends, the project of Grateful Dead co-founder Phil Lesh, for two summer 2002 shows that grossed $811,615. Two five-night runs with The Dead – a group featuring Weir; Grateful Dead co-founders Lesh, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann; and other musicians including Joan Osborne and Warren Haynes – in 2003 and 2004 grossed $2.46 million and nearly $2.10 million, respectively.

Ratdog headlined Red Rocks annually from 2006 to 2008, and supported three Avett Brothers shows there in 2014. And Furthur, another Dead offshoot featuring Weir, Lesh and several other musicians, played three-night stands at Red Rocks every summer from 2010 to 2013, averaging $1.71 million per run.

Earlier this month, Dead & Company, the stadium-conquering group featuring Weir, Hart, Kreutzmann, Chimenti, John Mayer and Oteil Burbridge announced the resurrection of its Mexican destination festival Playing In The Sand for January 2022. The festival immediately sold out, prompting the band to book a second Playing In The Sand weekend. Dead & Company’s final performances prior to the pandemic were at the 2020 installment of Playing In The Sand – the third iteration of the event – which grossed nearly $18.7 million.

In 2019, Dead & Company enjoyed the most lucrative year on the road since its formation in 2015, grossing $68.6 million and securing a No. 27 ranking on Pollstar‘s Top 100 Worldwide Tours chart.

Tickets for June’s Wolf Bros shows go on sale on April 30.
