Chvrches

We’re supposed to put new touring bands on the cover, right? Especially ones that make money and promoters happy? If that’s the case, this synthpop trio from Glasgow, Scotland, definitely fits the bill.

Lauren Mayberry, Iain Cook and Martin Doherty, a trio that had individual successes before becoming Chvrches, are hitting the big time because of extraordinarily catchy tunes and nonstop touring since the beginning of 2013.

The term “nonstop” can be overplayed, but a casual glance at Chrvches’ itinerary sees the band playing nearly every night of every month. Examples from this year: April 10 in Portland, Ore.; April 12 at Coachella; April 14 in Pomona, Calif.; April 15 in Ventura; April 16 in Reno, and then back to Indio, Calif., for the second weekend of Coachella.

As for tickets sold, how about 2,400 for two nights at the 9:30 Club, grossing $72,000?

“There have been almost no skeptical promoters on this entire cycle,” Ryan Craven of The Windish Agency told Pollstar. “If someone has been on the fence, all concerns have gone away when they learn of the team behind the band.”

That includes its record company, Glassnote. Craven said that promoters have so much faith in the label that “they all seemed pretty jazzed to take what might have been considered a chance on the band.”

Chvrches formed in 2011 and played for the first time in the summer of 2012. The band released its Recover EP in in March of last year and its debut album, The Bones of What You Believe, arrived in September.
