Lesbian Singer
‘Not Welcome’ At Church Gig

A March 23 show by singer-songwriter Anika Moa at Masterton’s Lighthouse Church in New Zealand changed venues when some parishioners objected to hosting her.

Moa came out as a lesbian in 2007 and has two children with her partner, burlesque dancer Azaria Universe.

Lighthouse Church did not cancel the performance, but promoter Mark Rogers left because it was “just not right to hold a show at a place where a performer is not welcome.”

The show moved to St Mark’s Church, Carterton, whose the Rev. Jenny Chalmers said, “Sexual orientation is such a small part of a person’s whole, it’s not something that we consider when we have concerts in our church at all.”

Lighthouse Church offered to pay Rogers shifting costs as new posters and tickets.

Moa tweeted, “Just going to lesbian myself up and go for a lesbian walk. Maybe I should eat some lesbian apples? Oops I just lesbian farted.”
