Group Readies Ideas For Closed Evansville Arena

A task force expects by the end of the month to give Evansville’s mayor proposals for future uses of the city’s shuttered Roberts Stadium.

The 56-year-old facility was shut down in September soon before the opening of the new $127 million downtown Ford Center arena. City officials have been undecided about what to do with Roberts Stadium.

A task force appointed by Mayor Lloyd Winnecke on Thursday outlined six ideas gleaned from more than 600 offered by the public. The Evansville Courier & Press reports those include turning Roberts into a multisports complex including a fitness center, playground and pool, remaking it into an exposition center or turning the area into large park.

Task force members say cost estimates are still being developed.
