A Slightly Lower Frequency
Frequency didn’t do quite as well as last year when it sold out its 40,000 capacity in advance, but festival chief Harry Jenner was happy the Austrian event pulled 115,000 across three days.
He feels a 4 percent drop in attendance was a good performance in the current economic climate, particularly as he felt there’d been a more significant decline in foreign visitors.
“I think that some of us may be missing the Brits,” he told Pollstar, noting that Benicassim and Exit festival – two other popular holiday destinations for UK youngsters – had also suffered a fall in attendance. The Spanish and Serbian fests fell by more than 10 percent.
This year’s Frequency would have been a good holiday choice, as the site on the banks of the River Traisen at St. Pölten enjoyed three days of warm sunshine, for the first time in the festival’s 10-year history. Jenner said it was clear the crowd was thoroughly enjoying itself.
The acts keeping up the holiday spirit Aug. 19-21 included Muse, Massive Attack, Wir Sind Helden, Die Toten Hosen, The Gaslight Anthem, White Lies, Mumford & Sons, The Cribs, Billy Talent, Marina & The Diamonds, and 30 Seconds To Mars.
