Pop Jumps Q Awards
Pop took over this year’s Q Awards as solo acts such as Lady Gaga and Lily Allen beat bands like Kings Of Leon and Coldplay to take major prizes.
Allen won best track with “The Fear,” beating Kasabian’s “Fire” and Arctic Monkeys’ “Crying Lightning.” Lady Gaga took best video with “Just Dance.”
It went from pop to the present to pop from the past as “The Q Idol” award went to Spandau Ballet and “classic song” went to Frankie Goes To Hollywood for “Relax.”
Gaga lost out to White Lies in the best act category, as the London-based band goes on from being the most popular act at this year’s European Talent Exchange Programme.
The rock acts were a long way from being pushed out of it, although Coldplay, which dominated last year’s award, went home empty-handed.
Best live act went to Arctic Monkeys, best album went to Kasabian for West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum and Muse took the loftily titled “best act in the world today” award.
The other acts recognised by the bestselling music monthly magazine at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel Oct. 26 included U2 (classic album), Mr. Hudson (breakthrough artist), Sonic Youth (innovation in sound), Yusuf Islam (classic songwriter), Robert Plant (outstanding contribution), The Specials (Q inspiration award), Marianne Faithfull (Q Icon) and Edwyn Collins (Q Legend).
