Swedish House Mafia x The Weeknd Take Ye’s Headlining Spot At Coachella; Nine Inch Nails Replace Foo Fighters At Boston Calling
Following the news that Ye, the artist formerly known as Kanye West, would no longer be appearing at Coachella, the festival has announced its replacement headliners for both Sundays: Swedish House Mafia and The Weeknd.
Swedish House Mafia had previously been on the event’s lineup, with a separate line on the original poster proclaiming that the trio was “returning to the desert” after playing the 2012 fest.
While not on the original lineup, The Weeknd will be joining Swedish House Mafia for their set. The Weeknd and Swedish House Mafia are frequent collaborators, having released the single “Moth To A Flame” last year, and the Swedish producers lending their skills to the tracks “How Do I Make You Love Me?” and “Sacrifice” on the acclaimed record, Dawn FM. The artists also share a manager, Wassim “Sal” Slaiby.
Ye did not provide a reason for dropping out of the festival, however, the rapper had stated earlier in the year that he would drop out of Coachella unless Eilish, who is headlining the festival both Saturdays, apologized to Travis Scott for a perceived slight when she stated “We’re taking care of our people, hold on. I wait for people to be okay until I keep going,” upon spotting a struggling fan in the crowd. A petition with nearly 50,000 signatures calling for Ye’s removal from the lineup had also been going around on Change.org following the rapper’s messages on social media directed towards his ex-wife, Kim Kardashian, and her current boyfriend, Pete Davidson.
Meanwhile, Boston Calling also announced a lineup change in the event’s headliners. The event was initially supposed to see Foo Fighters closing out the event on Friday, May 27. However, after the sudden passing of drummer Taylor Hawkins, the rock band canceled all previously scheduled events. Instead, Nine Inch Nails will be taking the band’s place for the first day of the festival.
This year sees Nine Inch Nails returning to the road for the first time in four years. In February, the band announced 11 shows that will see them making stops in Atlanta, Denver, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and more.
Harry Styles will be performing at Coachella on both Fridays, with Billie Eilish headlining the festival on both Saturdays. Boston Calling’s other headliners include The Strokes and Metallica. Both festivals will be returning for the first time since the pandemic.
