Chart Scene: Lady Gaga’s Stadium Tour Hits APX & LIVE75 Charts
Lady Gaga appears on LIVE75 as the “Hot Shot” artist of the week, debuting in the second position after reports were submitted for eight concerts on her “Chromatica Ball” stadium tour, promoted by Live Nation. She also charts on the Artist Power Index, holding the No. 4 ranking following a monthlong rise after her debut at No. 20 on APX in the July 25 issue.
This week on LIVE75, her eight-show ticket average of 45,010 is based on box-office sales at the first six concerts on the trek, all set in European venues.
Toronto’s Rogers Centre and Nationals Park in Washington, D.C. – the first two North American stadiums on the tour – also fall in the eligibility timeframe for the chart tallies.
Her first two-night engagement on the tour at London’s three-year-old Tottenham Hotspur Stadium took place July 29-30 and produced the top gross among her reported dates with $9.62 million USD from 86,508 sold seats.
Yet, Lady Gaga’s highest-grossing single performance falls only $1.6 million less than that. She played Stade de France in the Paris suburb of Saint-Denis on July 24 and scored an $8.03 million take from a whopping 78,866 sold tickets.
The “Chromatica Ball” tour’s top North American gross so far is her Aug. 6 performance in Toronto, earning $5.12 million from 47,864 tickets. The Aug. 8 event in Washington drew 35,920 fans and grossed $4.89 million.
Coldplay takes the No. 1 ranking on LIVE75 for the sixth time in 2022 with a 76,409-ticket average at seven performances on the group’s “Music of the Spheres” world tour. With box office figures at two European stadiums eligible for inclusion on the chart, the band racked up a gross average of $6.92 million to take the “Heavy Hitter” tag with the highest per-show average of the week.
The first venue was Berlin’s Olympiastadion with three shows from July 10-13 producing a $20.39 million gross from 216,535 tickets. Then, a four-show stint at Stade de France, with a total ticket count of 318,331, grossed $28.04 million and ranks as the second highest of the year so far by a single concert headliner at one engagement. It is surpassed only by Ed Sheeran’s $38.44 million haul from five shows at London’s Wembley Stadium.
Sheeran again sits at No. 1 on the Artist Power Index marking his fifth consecutive appearance atop the chart, based on his own two-show stand at Stade de France along with three other European stadiums on his “Mathematics” tour. He has the third-highest Live rank on APX behind Coldplay and Red Hot Chili Peppers at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively.
Although four headlining artists re-enter APX after falling off the chart at some point during the past 13 weeks (signified by a hyphen), one group makes its first appearance on the Index during that same time period. The No. 47 position belongs to virtual band Gorillaz on the strength of one performance Down Under at Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena. The band played for a crowd of 15,065 at the venue on July 26, taking in $1.29 million at the box office. The brief tour, promoted by Secret Sounds, also included concerts at Melbourne’s John Cain Arena and Adelaide Entertainment Centre.
Veteran singer-songwriter Mary Chapin Carpenter is LIVE75’s “Noise Maker” after making a 12-position jump on the chart following her No. 71 ranking in the previous issue based on a five-show ticket average of 723. This week the five-time Grammy Award winner is 59th among the top 75 with a per-show average of 707 from shows during July at venues in Minneapolis; Iowa City, Iowa; Champaign, Illinois and Columbus, Ohio.
