Rage Against The Machine Cancels 2023 North American Tour
Rage Against The Machine has canceled the North American leg of their 2023 tour following frontman Zack de la Rocha’s leg injury from July. The singer suffered a tear in his left Achilles tendon at their Chicago show.
“Only 8% of my tendon was left intact,” de la Rocha said in a statement shared to the band’s Instagram account. “And even that portion was severely compromised. It’s not simply a question of being able to perform again, but extends to basic functionality going forward. That’s why I’ve made the painful and difficult decision to cancel the remaining shows on our 2023 North American leg.”
The band’s reunion tour has faced numerous setbacks over the years – the tour had initially planned to kick off the spring of 2020. The band finally took the stage on July 9 at Alpine Valley Music Theatre in East Troy, Wisconsin, before soon having to pull their remaining dates due to de la Rocha’s injury. Rage Against The Machine canceled their UK and European dates with hopes to be able to return to North America later on.
“It’s been almost three months since Chicago, and I still look down at my leg in disbelief,” de la Rocha’s statement read. “Two years of waiting through he pandemic hoping we would have an opening to be a band again and continue the work we started 30 some odd years ago. Rehearsing, training, reconciling, working our way back to form. Then on hand a half shows into it and my tendon tears. Felt like a sick joke the universe played on me. As I write this I remind myself it’s just bad circumstance. Just a fucked up moment.”
Despite de la Rocha’s injury, the band managed to push forward for several more shows, grossing $3.3 million for their two nights at Washington, D.C.’s Capital One Arena on Aug. 2 and 3, and $8.1 million for five nights at Madison Square Garden taking place Aug. 8-14, according to reports submitted to Pollstar‘s Boxoffice.
Tickets for the canceled shows will be automatically refunded to the original payment method. Fans who payed cash should contact the box office directly.
