Chart Scene: Katy Perry Moves On Charts With Las Vegas Return
Katy Perry progresses in the rankings on both the Artist Power Index and LIVE75 with the most recent box-office figures reported from her “Play” concert residency at The Theater at Resorts World in Las Vegas. After last appearing at the venue in October, she kicked off her first series of 2023 dates on Feb. 15 and performed eight nights through March 4, grossing over $4.3 million from 32,257 sold seats during the run.
The production averaged 4,032 sold tickets per night to take the 30th slot on LIVE75 — the third highest among the 18 artists earning their first chart ranking in over a month. However, on the Artist Power Index she made her debut appearance for the year in the Jan. 23 issue, before she returned to Las Vegas, and entered at No. 47 just on the strength of her Streaming, Airplay and Social scores.
Her APX ranking ultimately jumped 36 positions to No. 11, though, in the Feb. 20 issue after her shows began in mid-February and she earned her first Live rank of the year. She has moved steadily up the chart ever since. This week, she advances two slots from ninth to No. 7.
Perry launched the “Play” residency on Dec. 29, 2021, and, so far, she has racked up an overall gross of $29 million from 48 performances — six sets of eight-show engagements throughout 2022 and the opening months of this year. Since the residency’s debut, her show has logged a total attendance of 178,896.
Both LIVE75 and the Artist Power Index retain their highest-ranked artists after both have held the top position for multiple weeks. The Red Hot Chili Peppers score a three-peat on LIVE75 based on box-office results from the Oceania leg of their global stadium trek, while Ed Sheeran has owned No. 1 on APX since the first issue in February. His ranking is also based on shows in New Zealand and Australia. He will resume his “Mathematics” tour in North America in May and wrap in Los Angeles in September.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers also make it three weeks in a row with “Heavy Hitter” status on LIVE75 as the tour with the largest gross average. With grosses from all eight shows in Australia and New Zealand totaling $48.2 million, the average comes to $6 million per show. It tops the second-highest gross average earned on Elton John’s farewell tour – also from Oceania dates early in the year – by just over $481,000.
Landing at No. 5 on LIVE75 is ENHYPEN, the K-pop boy band with the highest debut of the week. The seven-member group averaged 17,917 sold tickets per concert from three venues on their “Manifesto” tour’s trek through Asian markets. Two stadium shows at Osaka, Japan’s Kyocera Dome and a pair of shows at IMPACT Arena in Bangkok in January, along with an early-February three-show stint in the Philippines at Mall of Asia Arena near Manila together moved 125,421 tickets. Grosses from all seven sold-out performances reached $13.3 million.
Last September ENHYPEN kicked off their first tour since forming in 2020 as the winners of a South Korean competition television show “I-Land.” The tour began on Sept. 17-18 at SK Olympic Handball Gymnasium in their hometown Seoul. A string of seven U.S. arena shows followed in October including a sold-out American finale at New York’s Radio City Music Hall on the 15th with a crowd of 5,577 in attendance. Then in November they played two-night engagements in three Japanese cities to wrap the year. Altogether, their 2022 tour dates took in $12.3 million from 122,551 sold seats at 15 concerts.
Comedian Jo Koy is LIVE75’s “Noise Maker” after moving up the chart six positions. He ranks 20th based on a 12-show ticket average of 6,804 from both arena and theater dates. His best attendance came from Honolulu’s Neal S. Blaisdell Arena with 19,024 tickets sold Feb. 24-26.
