Chart Scene: Lizzo Leaps Into Live75’s Top 5
Coldplay’s March run through South America provided enough fuel to keep the English band atop the Live75 chart for another week with country star Luke Combs hanging tough in No. 2 on the back of five U.S. stadium shows.
With previous No. 3 Ed Sheeran sliding off the chart of the highest-selling active tours as he takes a break from the road, there was room for some movement into the top five.
Lizzo took the most advantage. On the strength of seven consecutive sellouts to finish the European leg of the “Special” tour, the world’s most famous flautist moved up 12 spots to No. 5.
After a 12,000-ticket, $794,094-grossing show at Paris’ Accor Arena March 5, Lizzo crossed the Channel for an impressive run throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland.
She posted sellouts in Glasgow, Birmingham, Manchester and Dublin before a double sellout at London’s O2 March 15 and 16. Those shows sold a total of 90,864 tickets, grossing more than $7.3 million.
Lizzo is back on the western side of the Atlantic as the tour marches on for 18 North American arena dates between April 21 and June 2. A handful of dates in Australia and New Zealand follow, with tour wrapping at Japan’s Fuji Rock Festival July 30.
Just ahead of Lizzo is last week’s No. 5, Bruce Springsteen. The Boss moves up a spot as he and the E Street Band continued to sell out North American arenas. Bruce and crew took a brief break after the April 14 show at Newark’s Prudential Center before launching the European leg with a pair of shows April 28 and 30 at Barcelona’s Estadi Olímpic, the first two of 31 shows in Europe, the UK and Ireland. They’ll return stateside with two plays at Wrigley Field August 9 and 11.
The highest debut on the Live75 goes to Depeche Mode. The venerable English new wavers make their mark at No. 7 during their limited North American run.
Maroon 5 earns “Breakthrough” status this week, as the band’s residency at Las Vegas’ Dolby Live at Park MGM continued to post sellouts in April with audiences of roughly 4,800 nightly and an average ticket price of close to $180.
Combs should start challenging Coldplay for the No. 1 rank as the summer wears on. His “Growin’ Up World Tour” remains in stadiums as the days get longer, playing weekend dates in Chicago, Minneapolis, Boise and Vancouver in May and Edmonton, Kansas City and St. Louis in June. The North American leg wraps in July with stadium plays in Tampa, Charlotte, Foxborough and Philadelphia. He has an Australian arena run scheduled for August and a daunting European loop in October.
Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran continue to hold down the top positions on the Artist Power Index to no great surprise. Swift, still on her heralded “Eras” tour of North American stadiums is the only artist who ranks in the top 10 in Live (1), Streaming, Airplay (both 5) and Social Rank (10). Sheeran’s Live and Social ranks slid from last week’s charts but his strong Streaming (3) and Airplay (6) rankings keep him in the No. 2 spot.
Post Malone returns to APX after 11 weeks, entering the chart at No. 3. The genre-blender is on the road in Scandinavia, but his ranking benefits from strong Streaming and Airplay figures. He released his first compilation album, The Diamond Collection, April 21 and its lead single “Chemical” has charted well, particularly in Europe and Asia. Malone, the only artist to ever top both the rap and adult contemporary charts, benefits from his cross-format style. “Chemical” is getting spins on both Hot AC and Top 40 formatted radio stations.
A pair of British singer-songwriters made strong moves into the Top 10 this week. Lewis Capaldi moved from 13 to 7 and Sam Smith moved from 14 to 8. The pair leapfrogged veteran Brits Coldplay and Elton John.
