Big Band, Small Venues
Rob Thomas, fresh off his acclaimed pairing with Carlos Santana on 1999’s Supernatural smash, is back with his matchbox twenty mates. The band hits the road May 16 with a club tour in support of its sophomore album, Mad Season By Matchbox Twenty, which is due in stores May 23.
Matchbox twenty, which recently opted to write out the numeral 20 in its name, kicks off the tour at the Norva Theater in Norfolk, Va., ending its North American leg at San Francisco’s Fillmore. A short European tour starts June 10 in Cologne, Germany, and ends the 18th in Glasgow, Scotland.
The band has some high expectations with the new release, coming off an RIAA Diamond Award for selling more that 10 million copies of Yourself Or Someone Like You, which was released in 1996.
Thomas is getting a little more credit these days, and is now touted as the group’s “central songwriter” since using his downtime between albums to pen Santana’s No. 1 hit and multiple Grammy winner, “Smooth.”
