A chambermaid found the bass player’s body the morning of August 26. There were no visible signs of trauma and the cause of death is still unknown.

Woody had also played bass for the Allman Brothers Band from 1989 to 1997. He left the group with slide guitarist Warren Haynes to form Gov’t Mule.

Woody is survived by his wife and their 3-year-old daughter. The family made its home in Nashville.

A message posted on the band’s Web site offered few details on Woody’s death. “We were very saddened to learn yesterday morning that Allen Woody unexpectedly passed away sometime Friday evening or early Saturday morning. It is our understanding that Allen had an early morning flight scheduled from New York to his home in Tennessee. At the present time, that is all the information that we have,” the statement read.

Gov’t Mule’s September headlining tour dates have been canceled, however, the band is expected to open for Ben Harper in November as scheduled.
