The irreverent and experimental Flaming Lips are serving as the opening band on the tour but they’re also playing the role of Beck’s backing band. As Beck told MTV in August, “I like their (Flaming Lips) sense of humor and their creativity. I think it’s good for this record and it’s something I wanted to do on this tour.”

The record Beck refers to is his stripped down Sea Change, which is due out September 24. The mostly acoustic offering is a departure from 1999’s funky Midnight Vultures.

Last month, Beck traversed the States on a rare solo acoustic tour, testing the waters with his new material. The gigs kept Hollywood gossipers busy detailing the A-list of celebs in attendance.

Meanwhile, the Flaming Lips have been busy with their own projects. Their album, Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots, was recently nominated for the new Shortlist Music Prize. They spent most of the summer on Cake’s Unlimited Sunshine outing, alongside De La Soul, Kinky and Modest Mouse.

Once again, Beck’s official Web site is offering pre-sale tickets to all shows. Unlike some similar offerings, Beck’s deal is free and only requires registration and an email address.
