The Field Day Music Festival, featuring acts like Radiohead and the Beastie Boys, was scheduled for Friday on a former Grumman aircraft plant in Calverton. More than 35,000 people were expected to attend.

The Riverhead chief of police has said the town’s small force is not equipped to handle the crowds, and New York State police said Tuesday that they would be unable to send additional officers to help.

Residents have expressed fears of drunken driving, lost revenues to the town and terrorist attacks.

Last week, environmental groups went to court to try to block the festival, saying it would imperil a nature preserve and groundwater protection area. A State Supreme Court judge refused to issue a restraining order to stop the event.

But the Suffolk County Health Department had already denied a separate permit for the concert, and the Suffolk County attorney’s office said it would seek to stop the event in court if the promoters did not let ticketholders know the show was canceled.

Meanwhile, Chris Kent, an attorney for the concert’s promoters, said organizers were looking at other venues around the New York region to stage the show.

The Riverhead Town Board and Suffolk County officials scheduled separate news conferences for Wednesday, and the concert’s promoters also plan to make a statement.
