“This is a bitter blow for me,” Sting said. “It is a terrible beginning for the U.K. tour to be in my home town and not be able to sing. I want to do well in Newcastle and for my home town to be proud of me.”

The singer continued, saying he feels “gutted,” “beleagured and injured” and “disappointed and frustrated.” He promised to “make it up to Newcastle and everyone else,” saying that new dates for the postponed shows would be announced shortly.

The tour is set to resume May 12 in Birmingham.

Illness also forced the pop superstar to cancel a series of dates in February. His European tour is scheduled to run through mid-June before he heads to North America, where the itinerary stretches into October.
