Doherty Needles Easyet

Regular drug offender and newspaper celebrity Pete Doherty was said to be responsible for an EasyJet flight being held at Barcelona airport after a syringe was found in a toilet.

Spanish police were called to meet the plane from London Gatwick after Doherty, who’s also a former member of The Libertines and currently fronts Babyshambles, was suspected of taking drugs.

A crew member reportedly found “a syringe hidden in a bin, covered in blood,” after staff became suspicious because the troubled star had spent “an unusual amount of time in the toilet.”

After the discovery of the syringe, Doherty was questioned by crew and became “agitated and aggressive,” according to an EasyJet spokeswoman.

Spanish Guardia Civil police met Doherty and four friends but found no suspicious substances in the lavatories.

They were not arrested and were allowed to continue their journey to the city’s Primavera Sound Festival.

The Guardia officers only found a bottle of heroin substitute methadone, which Doherty is taking as part of a drug treatment program.

The incident has clearly needled EasyJet, which has announced that it’s banning Doherty and his four fellow travelers. “You simply cannot take syringes on an aircraft without permission and cause a potential hazard to other passengers,” the company spokeswoman said. Aviation regulations mean passengers must inform an airline in advance if they are carrying a syringe for medical reasons. EasyJet said Doherty failed to do that.

The act didn’t arrive at Primavera early enough for a sound check but the performance went ahead on time, kicking off a June 1-3 festival that pulled around 15,000 per day. Others on the bill at Barcelona Forum, an outdoor event and exhibition site, included Motorhead, Lou Reed, The Flaming Lips, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Dinosaur Jr., Drive-By Truckers, Killing Joke, Lambchop, Mogwai, Richard Hawley, The Robocop Kraus, Violent Femmes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Yo La Tengo.
