The August 4 gig was canceled a few hours before Gilmour was scheduled to perform; the defect was discovered prior to a sound check that evening. One of the columns supporting the stage was slightly angled and therefore unable to hold the weight of the lights and other stage equipment, according to Italian news reports.

Gilmour will perform in the lagoon city August 11 and 12, according to a statement posted on his Web site.

In 1989, Pink Floyd caused chaos when it performed on a floating stage near St. Mark’s Square, drawing an audience of some 200,000 fans. City officials and residents complained about littering, scattered acts of vandalism and drug use.
