The itinerary includes August concerts in New York and Indiana, Seattle’s Bumbershoot festival and more in September, and dates throughout the country – including Alaska – in October.

LaVette’s new album, I’ve Got My Own Hell To Raise, was released last year on Anti. The disc contains covers of Fiona Apple, Sinead O’Connor, Dolly Parton, Aimee Mann, Lucinda Williams, Joan Armatrading and more.

The singer consciously chose a range of material that doesn’t fall under the traditional “soul” banner.

“I want everything that I know in my voice to be heard,” LaVette said. “You can’t pick up all the inflections in a straight-ahead rhythm and blues song. I feel I’ve completely mastered rhythm and blues because it is so straight ahead. These kind of songs I haven’t really had a chance to do.”

And the world has been hearing her. LaVette’s concerts have been as diverse as her voice. This year, she’s performed at the Jammy Awards, the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, and the North Sea Jazz Festival, just to name a few stops.
