Boyd Renovation Halted

Live Nation has halted renovation work at Philadelphia’s historic Boyd Theatre while the company reevaluates the project, leaving local preservationists wondering about its future.

Members of the nonprofit group Friends of the Boyd are said to be upset that the theatre, built in 1928, might be torn down instead of saved.

“We are currently looking at a number of options for the theatre moving forward but have not made any definitive decisions at this time,” Live Nation spokesman John Vlautin told Pollstar. The 2,400-seat art deco movie theatre, which closed in 2002, was purchased in 2005 by Clear Channel Communications.

The company announced at the time the venue would be revamped to host concerts, musicals, films and other events by late 2006.
