‘Tequila’ Saxophone Player Dies

Danny Flores, who played saxophone and shouted “Tequila” in the famous song of the same name, died September 19th in Huntington Beach, Calif.

Flores, 77, reportedly died of complications of pneumonia. He was responsible for writing the “Tequila” riff and playing sax on the song. It ended up as a B-side on one of The Champs’ singles in 1958.

The song climbed the charts and hit No. 1 in 1959. “I can honestly tell you he never got tired of that song,” said Flores’ wife Sharee, who toured with him as a singer.
