Beginning today, fans can download one song a week from a variety of web sites. The first track, “Boots of Chinese Plastic,” is available at AOL’s Spinner.com.

Other partners in the release include Apple Quicktime, Clear Channel, CMT, iLike, iMeem, MSN Windows Media, MP3.com/Download.com, VH1 Classic, Yahoo and CBS.

The location of the next free track will be announced at ThePretenders.com.

Concrete, due September 23 on Shangri-La Music, is The Pretenders’ ninth studio release and sees band founder Chrissie Hynde collaborating with a new group of musicians: James Walbourne on guitar, Eric Heywood on pedal steel, Nick Wilkinson on bass and Jim Keltner on drums.

The album was recorded in 10 days and features “a stripped down roots” sound, which is “pure and raw” and “highlights Hynde’s timeless vocal sound.”

The band is expected to tour in support of the release in August and September, as well as perform on Yahoo’s “Nissan Live Sets” in October.
