Prison Sales Up

Recording sales may be declining but one market is emerging as Internet-proof: prison.

Pack Central, which started selling music to inmates in 2003, now does $1 million annually in business, company owner Bob Paris told

Sixty percent of the business is in cassettes because some facilities won’t allow CDs, which authorities fear could be turned into shivs.

In fact, screws are removed from cassettes for that reason, Paris said. Popular music includes Lil Wayne, Mariah Carey, Usher, Rihanna, Nickelback and Leona Lewis.
