McCarren Pool Closed
After three years of rock concerts, dance performances, theater productions and movie screenings, the McCarren Park Pool in Brooklyn, N.Y., will have its final concert with Sonic Youth August 30 before the 6,000-capacity venue goes back to its roots – a community swimming pool.
The pool was built in 1936 and closed in 1984.
It reopened in 2006 as a concert venue after being cleaned up and renovated along with an initial $200,000 from Live Nation.
If all goes as planned, after a $50 million renovation, the pool will reopen in 2011 and accommodate between 1,400 and 1,700 swimmers, according to the New York Sun.
