Soccer Strugglers Get A Madge Break

Madonna’s Sept. 9 show at Frankfurt Commerzbank Arena in Germany left the stadium’s soccer field in such a state that the local side was forced to postpone its next home match.

It may have been something of a relief to the players, as Eintracht Frankfurt and Karlsruher SC have both made a shaky start to the season and have slipped to the wrong end of the Bundesliga table.

Referee Thorsten Kinhoefer and league officials ruled that the pitch for the Sept. 12 fixture was so rough that it could cause injuries.

They suspended the game, which will be rescheduled.

The turf inside the arena was to have been completely re-laid before the match, but bad weather meant the job wasn’t finished.

The Frankfurt show was one of three Madonna dates in Germany, all promoted by Marek Lieberberg Konzertagentur. The others were at Berlin Olympic Stadium Aug. 28 and Dusseldorf LTU Arena Sept. 4.
