In conjunction with the Los Angeles Opera’s presentation of Richard Wagner’s four-part “Ring” cycle in 2010, more than 50 arts and educational institutions will collaborate to stage exhibitions, performances, symposia and special events inspired by the German composer April 15 through June 30 in Southern California.

Wagner’s “Ring” is epic in nature. Composed of “The Rhinegold,” “The Valkyrie,” “Siegfried,” and “Twilight of the Gods,” the cycle, which follows the struggles of the gods and Earth over three generations, runs about 15 hours. The performance is staged over four nights at the opera.

Plácido Domingo, L.A. Opera’s Eli and Edythe Broad General Director said the undertaking will be “a defining moment in the cultural history of Los Angeles.”

“Ring Festival L.A. will be the first of its kind, for, as far as we know, no other opera company that has presented the ‘Ring’ has involved all of the major cultural institutions of a great city in a 10-week festival.”

Planned offerings will include a presentation of “Light of the Valkyries” at Griffith Observatory and a Wagner-inspired hip-hop presentation by the daKAH Hip Hop Orchestra, according to the Los Angeles Times.Further details regarding budget, venues, activities and ticket prices are forthcoming.
