Turnabout Is Coldplay
Any resemblance between Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida” and Joe Satriani’s “If I Could Fly” is purely coincidental, the U.K. band said in response to a lawsuit filed by the guitar virtuoso.
“If there are any similarities between our two pieces of music, they are entirely coincidental, and just as surprising to us as to him,” Coldplay said in a statement.
Satriani filed a copyright infringement suit against the Grammy-nominated British band Dec. 4, claiming “Viva La Vida” incorporates “substantial original portions” of his 2004 instrumental.
He is seeking a jury trial, damages and “any and all profits” attributable to the alleged copyright infringement, according to Reuters.
In turn, Coldplay said, “Joe Satriani is a great musician, but he did not write the song ‘Viva La Vida.’ We respectfully ask him to accept our assurances of this and wish him well with his future endeavors.”
