Newport Fest Cutting Costs

The Newport Music Festival in Rhode Island is looking at more ways to cut costs since its main sponsor, Yamaha, pulled its sponsorship after 22 years.

Festival General Director Mark Malkovich III estimated that Yamaha has contributed between $3 million and $4 million since 1987 in addition to pianos for the annual classical music event.

The festival, going into its 41st season in July, was facing a $150,000 shortfall last year until last-minute donations made up for it.

Meanwhile, festival officials are considering cutting staff salaries and sticking with primarily American performers to keep costs down.
