MAMA Denies Swatting Barflies

British media company MAMA Group has been quick to dismiss rumours that two of its Barfly venues are due to shut down, claiming one has closed only because of problems with the building and the other is in an area that’s being redeveloped.

The Glasgow venue is said to have “structural problems,” while the Birmingham Institute building that houses the city’s Barfly is now subject to a multimillion-pound development.

MAMA, which recently sold half of its venues business to retailer HMV for £18.5 million, said the Glasgow and Birmingham venues will be reopened as soon as possible.

HMV is tuning in to the live music scene as store sales take a beating from illegal downloads, online streaming technology and the consumer spending slump.

The retailer plans to set up small concessions in the larger venues, while HMV loyalty card holders will be able to earn VIP access to gigs as a reward for shopping in store.
