Oasis’ China Run Canceled Over ‘Free Tibet’ Issues
From the band’s MySpace page:
“According to the show’s promoters, officials within the Chinese Ministry of Culture only recently discovered that Noel Gallagher appeared at a Free Tibet Benefit Concert on Randall’s Island in NY in 1997 and have now deemed that the band are consequently unsuitable to perform to their fans in the Chinese Republic on 3rd and 5th of April, during its 60th anniversary year.”
Seems the Chinese government is still smarting over Bjork’s dress-down of the communist nation when the Icelandic performer shouted, “Tibet!” after performing her song “Declare Independence” at a Shanghai concert one year ago.
Shortly after Bjork’s appearance, China’s Ministry of Culture issued a statement saying the artist “broke Chinese law and hurt Chinese people’s feelings,” adding, “there is no country that admits that Tibet is an ‘independent country.’”
Oasis says only its China dates have been canceled, and the band will still play scheduled concerts in Hong Kong and South Korea.
Meanwhile, China continues to protect its people from pop stars that might express any thought, speech or idea that contradicts the country’s outdated communist philosophy and / or promotes personal and national freedoms.
