Running With A Purpose
Gibbard and Willet are running while on tour this month to raise funds for the non-profit organization Water Wells for Africa.
The duo’s mileage will be recorded in real time at RunForWaterWells.com so fans can follow their progress, with a suggested donation of $1 for every mile they run.
Water Wells for Africa was founded by Willet’s family 12 years ago. Through donations, WWFA has constructed more than 100 wells in the drought-stricken South African country of Malawi.
WWFA wells provide fresh drinking water to 150,000 – 200,000 Malawians per day who would otherwise have no access to clean water. Each well costs approximately $6,000 to survey and install.
Both musicians are delighted they can raise money for a good cause and come clean about their healthy hobby at the same time.
“I have spent too many mornings jogging alone, returning sweaty while the others still sleep, stashing my tennies to keep my secret safe from the monolith that has forbade music and exercise to walk coolly arm in arm,” Willet explained. “Now I have a partner in Ben and a mission in WWFA. Join us!”
Gibbard adds, “While I’m glad Nathan and I will hopefully raise a good amount of money for a wonderful cause, what I’m really excited about is finally having a running partner on tour.”
